It's good to see the positive effects of Newborn Screening on the lives of babies and their families. Unfortunately, Indian babies are still suffering from treatable disorders due to a lack of awareness and participation of the state and central governments in this matter. Suffering parents, researchers working on IEMs, doctors who are managing and detecting the disorders should come together and convince the govt of India the importance for an effective Newborn Screening policy.

I need to know where all do we have neonatal screening in India? Are there any laboratories performing the tandem mass spectroscopy?

It is encouraging that some centers are starting newborn screening for rare disorders,. As a suffering father, I feel we should all, including NNF, IPA, FOGSI and ICMR campaign for Newborn Screening for Inborn Errors of Metabolism and appeal to the health ministry and Govt. of India to save and support newborn’s lives.

As an affected parent, I think if government of India sets facilities for screening for early and accurate diagnosis, we can save many lives of babies suffering from treatable disorders such as LSD , G6PD Deficiency, Lactose intolerance, CH and many others.

Thanks for the message. We hope so too. We've come a long way since the time we started in 2007. Awareness and acceptance of Newborn Screening has gradually increased. Need more doctors to encourage parents to go for the screening.

This is a very good initiative taken by SBTS in the US. In India, we need to raise awareness and information's on IEMs and Newborn Screening. We can start by awareness week seminar days and give massage to not only health management people, but also to policy makers, and parents that IEMs although rare are collectively common and it's important that they are picked early so babies can lead normal lives.

It is a fact The state of Goa has(10) lowest Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) in India, followed by Kerala (12), Manipur (16) and Puducherry (22). Also true is the fact that all these state are small, so doctors take better care of newborns.

Still, I think mandatory NBS plays a big role in saving babies in Goa, because if we screen some metabolic disorders 24 to 48 hours after the birth we can manage the disorder and the baby can lead a normal life.

I hope in future Newborn Screening would be mandatory all over India. MERD india is campaigning for an effective legislature for Newborn Screening for Inborn Errors of Metabolism by the health ministry and Govt. of India.
